Colorado Springs Urology Reaches Milestone with the BioProtect Balloon Spacer
Colorado Springs Urology is proud to share an important milestone for the practice and the patients we serve. Dr. J. Eric Derksen is the first physician in Colorado to become a certified applier of the BioProtect Balloon Spacer, reflecting our team’s ongoing commitment to offering a range of advanced, patient-centered treatment approaches for prostate cancer care.
The BioProtect Balloon Spacer is a biodegradable rectal spacer used during prostate radiation therapy to help reduce radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissues. By creating temporary space between the prostate and rectum, the device helps minimize potential side effects and supports more precise radiation delivery. It is placed during a minimally invasive outpatient procedure, remains in position throughout the course of radiation therapy, and is naturally resorbed by the body after treatment is complete.
Dr. Derksen recently completed the specialized training required to perform this procedure and is now among a growing number of physicians nationwide trained in the use of the BioProtect Balloon Spacer. His certification ensures patients in our region have access to this innovative option close to home.
“Being the first physician in Colorado to become certified is exciting – not only for me, but for our patients and all of Colorado Springs Urology,” said Dr. Derksen. “It illustrates our commitment to stay on the cutting-edge of technology and healthcare advancements.”
This milestone highlights Colorado Springs Urology’s dedication to delivering the most innovative treatments available, while expanding access to treatments that prioritize both effectiveness and quality of life. By integrating new technologies like the BioProtect Balloon Spacer, our team continues to enhance the care experience for patients facing prostate cancer.
